Aesopomum was named by Havlicek (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-u D Emsi Sepkoski's reference number: 25,651]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Schuchertellinae by Johnson (1970); to Areostrophiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).

J. G. Johnson 1970The genus is characterized by its irregular biconvex shape, its ornament of fine irregular striae, moderately high triangular interarea, and complete pseudodeltidium in the pedicle valve; and by its posteriorly directed bilobed cardinal process in the brachial valve.
