Agelesia was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. It is the type genus of Agelesiinae.

It was assigned to Agelesiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
