Alitaria was named by Cooper and Muir-Wood (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l C Serp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 400,1246].

It was assigned to Paramarginiferini by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
