Aporthophyla was named by Ulrich and Cooper (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 1,878].

It was assigned to Taffiidae by Neuman and Bruton (1974); to Taffiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
