Apophthegma sterzeli was named by Handlirsch (1909). It is an impression. Its type locality is Gottes Hilfe - Schacht, which is in a Westphalian D terrestrial horizon in the Grundflötz Formation of Germany.

It was recombined as Sooblatta sterzeli by Handlirsch (1909) and Schneider (1983).
