Bothrionia was named by Cooper and Grant (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Bothrionia nasuta.

It was assigned to Paramarginiferini by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
