Cactosteges was named by Cooper and Grant (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Cactosteges anomalus.

It was assigned to Rhamnariinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
