Ammonites maugesti was named by d'Orbigny (1844).

It was corrected as Ammonites maugenestii by Quenstedt (1845); it was corrected as Ammonites maugenesti by Oppel (1853); it was recombined as Aegoceras maugenesti by Weight (1882); it was recombined as Acanthopleuroceras maugenesti by Meister (1986) and Meister and Friebe (2003).
