Celebetes was named by Grant (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m Sepkoski's reference number: 403]. Its type is Celebetes gymnus.

It was assigned to Chonetellini by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
