Taxonomy
Chonetes was named by Fischer de Waldheim (1830) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-l C Tour-l Sepkoski's reference number: 25]. It is the type genus of Chonetidae, Chonetinae.

It was assigned to Chonetidae by Talent (1963); to Chonetinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
