Chonosteges was named by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm-u P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Aulosteges magnicostatus. It is the type genus of Chonosteginae.
It was assigned to Chonosteginae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
