Collumatus was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Collumatus solitarius.

It was assigned to Cyclacanthariinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
