Coscinarina was named by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Richthofenia communis.

It was assigned to Richthofeniinae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960); to Richthofeniidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
