Archaeoctonus was named by Pocock (1911). It is the type genus of Archaeoctonoidea.
It was assigned to Archaeoctonidae by Petrunkevitch (1949), Petrunkevitch (1953) and Kjellesvig-Waering (1986); and to Proscorpiidae by Dunlop et al. (2013).
