Craspedona was named by Cooper and Grant (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Craspedona newelli.

It was assigned to Institellinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
