Palaeobuthus was named by Petrunkevitch (1913). Its type is Palaeobuthus distinctus. It is the type genus of Palaeobuthoidea.
It was assigned to Isobuthidae by Petrunkevitch (1949) and Petrunkevitch (1953); and to Palaeobuthidae by Kjellesvig-Waering (1986) and Dunlop et al. (2013).
