Devonochonetes was named by Muir-Wood (1962) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-u D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 24]. It is the type genus of Devonochonetinae.

It was assigned to Devonochonetinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
