Stephanoceras mortilleti was named by Meneghini (1875) [As Ammonites (Stephanoceras) mortilleti].

It was recombined as Reynesocoeloceras mortilleti by Smith and Tipper (1996); it was recombined as Reynesoceras mortilleti by Géczy and Meister (1998) and Meister et al. (2011).
