Diaphragmus was named by Girty (1910) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 400]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Productus (Diaphragmus) by Reed (1944).

It was assigned to Productus by Reed (1944); to Productini by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
