Dichacaenia was named by Cooper and Dutro (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 708]. Its type is Dichacaenia perplexa.

It was assigned to Strophalosiinae by Cooper and Dutro (1982); to Donalosiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
