Medetera was named by Fischer von Waldheim (1819). It is extant.

It was assigned to Dolichopodidae by Giebel (1856), Meunier (1907), Carpenter (1992) and Solórzano Kraemer (2007); and to Medeterinae by Aldrich (1905), Grichanov et al. (2014) and Bickel (2016).
