Eoamphistrophia was named by Harper and Boucot (1978). Its type is Amphistrophia whittardi.

It was assigned to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); to Amphistrophiidae by Musteikis and Cocks (2004); and to Amphistrophiinae by Williams et al. (2000) and Rubel (2011).
