Eodevonaria was named by Twenhofel (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-u D Eife-l Sepkoski's reference number: 4,39]. Its type is Chonetes arcuatus. It is the type genus of Eodevonariidae.

It was reranked as Chonetes (Eodevonaria) by Twenhofel (1914).

It was assigned to Chonetes by Twenhofel (1914); to Eodevonariidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
