Epicelia was named by Grant (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad Sepkoski's reference number: 428]. Its type is Epicelia episcopiensis. It is the type genus of Epiceliinae.

It was assigned to Epiceliinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
