Taxonomy
Ammonites heterophyllus was named by Sowerby (1820). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Phylloceras.

It was recombined as Phylloceras (Phylloceras) heterophyllus by Wright and Kennedy (1984) and Kennedy (1994); it was recombined as Phylloceras heterophyllus by Wright et al. (1996) and Alsen (2006); it was recombined as Phylloceras heterophyllum by Howarth (1962), Jakobs (1997), Murphy and Rodda (2006) and Kovács (2011).
