Ammonites serpentinus was named by Schlotheim (1813).

It was recombined as Harpoceras (Harpoceras) serpentinum by Bécaud (2006) and Kovács (2011); it was recombined as Harpoceras serpentinum by Howarth (1992) and Benzaggagh et al. (2022).
