Taxonomy
Gemmellaroia was named by Cossmann (1898) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is the type genus of Gemmellaroiidae.

It was assigned to Gemmellaroiinae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960); to Gemmellaroiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
