Glyptosteges was named by Cooper and Grant (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm P Leon-l Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Glyptosteges intricatus.

It was assigned to Chonosteginae by Tazawa and Shen (1997); to Institellinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
