Goniotrema was named by Ulrich and Cooper (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 397,878]. Its type is Goniotrema perplexum.

It was assigned to Palaeostrophomeninae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
