Hercosia was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7,538]. It is the type genus of Hercosiidae.

It was assigned to Hercosiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
