Hesperomena was named by Cooper (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1,878]. Its type is Hesperomena leptellinoidea.

It was assigned to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hesperomenidae by Williams et al. (2000) and Benedetto (2012).
