Incisius was named by Grant (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 963,1142]. Its type is Incisius concisus. It is the type genus of Incisiini.

It was assigned to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Incisiini by Williams et al. (2000) and Shen et al. (2003).
