Institella was named by Cooper (1942) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. It is the type genus of Institellinae.

It was assigned to Institellinae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
