Isochonetes was named by Ayzenverg (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash-l]. Its type is Isochonetes larinoensis.

It was assigned to Rugosochonetinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
