Alytidae was named by Fitzinger (1843). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Alytinae by Sanchiz (1998).

It was assigned to Discoglossidae by Sanchiz (1998); to Anura by Hugues-Alexandre et al. (2013), Vianey-Liaud et al. (2014) and Georgalis et al. (2016); and to Anura by de Lapparent de Broin et al. (2020).
