Leptaenisca was named by Beecher (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl D Sieg Sepkoski's reference number: 25,1066].

It was assigned to Leptaenoideidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
