Leptelloidea was named by Jones (1928). Its type is Plectambonites schmidti leptelloides.
It was assigned to Leptestiinae by Opik (1933); to Plectambonitidae by Alikhova (1953); to Leptellininae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
