Lethamia was named by Waterhouse (1973) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 963]. Its type is Lethamia ligurritus. It is the type genus of Lethamiini.
It was assigned to Costispiniferini by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lethamiini by Williams et al. (2007).
