Taxonomy
Cardium austriacum was named by Hauer (1853). It is the type species of Palaeocardita.

It was recombined as Cardita austriaca by Stoppani (1865), Henry (1876) and Bittner (1901); it was recombined as Palaeocardita austriacum by Conrad (1867); it was recombined as Palaeocardita austriaca by Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
