Lialosia was named by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Strophalosia kimberleyensis.

It was assigned to Heteralosiinae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960); to Strophalosiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
