Liraria was named by Cooper and Grant (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm-u P Leon-l Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Liraria lirata.

It was assigned to Auriculispininae by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Auriculispinini by Williams et al. (2007).
