Lyonia was named by Archbold (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 963]. It is the type genus of Lyoniini.
It was assigned to Grandaurispininae by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lyoniini by Williams et al. (2007).
