Merciella was named by Lamont and Gilbert (1945). It is not extant. Its type is Leptellina (Merciella) vesper.

It was reranked as Leptellina (Merciella) by Williams et al. (2000).

It was assigned to Leptellina by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
