Orbicula koninckii was named by Geinitz (1848).

It was recombined as Discina konincki by Howse (1857) and Geinitz (1861); it was recombined as Discina koninckii by Davidson (1858); it was recombined as Orbiculoidea konincki by Clapham (2015).
