Gemmatricolpites subsphaericus was named by Archangelsky (1973). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: p.m. 1007; coord. 27.8/107.8. Stored at Museo de La Plata, Paleobotanical division., a plant debris (Pollen grain). Its type locality is Bajada de Hansen, which is in a Paleocene terrestrial shale in Argentina.

Archangelsky 1973Grano prolado esferoidal a subprolado, de contorno ecuatorial circular. Colpos llegando cerca del polo, de márgenes poco a bastante definidos. Exina compuesta por dos capas fusionadas, no distinguibles claramente, algo más gruesas en los mesocolpios, de hasta 1.8 µ de espesor. Escultura desde verrucosa a gemada con elementos densamente dispuestos hasta los márgenes de los colpos, de diámetros muy variables, hasta 1 µ, de base subcircular a subpoligonal; elementos mayores dispuestos preferentemente en los mesocolpios.
