Orbinaria was named by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 25,1200,1246]. Its type is Productella pyxidata.

It was assigned to Productellinae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960); to Rugaurini by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
