Marginifera (Otariella) was named by Waterhouse (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Marginifera otaria.

It was reranked as Otariella by Williams et al. (2000) and Sepkoski (2002).
