Barrosopus was named by Coria et al. (2002). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Barrosopus slobodai.

It was assigned to Paxavipedidae by McCrea et al. (2015); and to Aves by Calvo (2007) and Buckley et al. (2016).
