Planispina was named by Stehli (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: P l Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Planispina conida.

It was synonymized subjectively with Teguliferina by Cooper and Grant (1975).

It was assigned to Teguliferinidae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960); to Teguliferininae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
