Plectodonta was named by Kozlowski (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-m D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 25,878,965]. Its type is Plectodonta mariae.

It was reranked as Sowerbyella (Plectodonta) by Kupfahl (1952).

It was assigned to Sowerbyella by Kupfahl (1952); to Sowerbyellidae by Talent (1963); to Sowerbyellinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
